About Nsfas

National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a government-supporting system in South Africa, that seeks to support citizen students financially through their tertiary education.

Who qualifies for NSFAS funding and should apply for support

  • All South African citizens
  • All SASSA grant recipients qualify for funding
  • Applicants whose combined household income is not more than R350 000 per annum
  • A person with disability: Combined household income must not be more than R600 000 per annum
  • Students who started studying before 2018 and whose household income is not more than R122 000 per annum.

Who should not apply for NSFAS government support

  • Students that have completed a previous qualification.
  • Students with a combined household income of more than R350 000 per annum.
  • Students who have already applied, qualified, and received funding. They are automatically funded for the duration of their studies provided they pass their modules and meet the academic requirements.
  • Foreign students (any student who is not a South African citizen).

Areas the support covers for Applicants

NSFAS plays an important role in helping South African citizens financially, through schooling either in a University or a Tvet College. The Financial support covers the following listed below:

University in South Afric

  • Cover’s Accommodation
    According to the university’s actual costs (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence)
  • Cover’s Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7 500  per annum
  • Cover’s  Living allowance R15, 000  per annum
  • Cover’s Book allowances are R5200 per annum
  • Incidental/personal care allowance of R2900 per annum for students in catered residences

Tvet College in South Africa

  • Cover’s accommodation in an urban area R24,000 per annum
  • Cover’s accommodation in a peri-urban area is R18,900 per annum
  • Cover’s accommodation in a rural area is R15,750 per annum
  • Cover’s Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7,350  per annum
  • Cover’s Transport R7000 per annum
  • Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum

Nsfas Bursary 2023-2024

Nsfas Bursary 2023-2024: The National Student Financial Aid Scheme is a South African government student financial aid scheme that provides financial aid to undergraduate students to help pay for the cost of their tertiary education after finishing high school. It is funded by the Department of Higher Education and Training. The scheme was established in terms of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme Act 56 of 1999. We provide financial assistance in the form of bursaries and loans to eligible students at public universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges in South Africa.

 

Nsfas Bursary Opening And Closing Date 2024-2025

The application doors for Nsfas will be opened for the year 2024 to all applicants from the 7th of November 2023 and closes on the 21st of January 2024. Applicants are therefore urged to apply within the application deadline.

 

What does the bursary cover?

Amounts indicated for accommodation, living allowance, transport and learning materials need to be aligned with the approved latest DHET guidelines.

UNIVERSITY

  • Accommodation
    As per the actual costs charged by the university (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence)
  • Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7 500  per annum
  • Living allowance R15, 000  per annum
  • Book allowances R5200 per annum

Required Supporting Documents To Apply For NSFAS Bursary.

  1. Provide your own cellphone number and email address
  2. You must have a copy of your ID or birth certificate
  3. National ID copies of parents, guardians, or spouse
  4. The evidence of your income or 1 year’s IRP5 if necessary
  5. The proof of income of your parents, guardian, or spouse.
  6. If you are a SASSA grant recipient, you don’t need to provide any evidence of income.
  7. All Applicants with a disability should provide and submit a completed and signed Disability Annexure A Form
  8. An applicant known as a Vulnerable Child by the Department of Social Development should also provide a completed and signed Vulnerable Child Declaration and Consent Form. Nsfas 2024-2025

 

How to Apply for NSFAS Bursary Online Application

  1. Visit the NSFAS Application website: www.nsfas.org.za
  2. Then, you click on the ‘myNSFAS’ tab
  3. Create a myNSFAS account.
  4. Click on the ‘APPLY’ tab
  5. Update your personal information
  6. Answer the questions you see on the screen
  7. Upload all the required supporting documents
  8. Finally, you click on ‘submit’
