500 sassa grant 2023-2024
If you are in South Africa and are receiving a social grant from SASSA, you may be aware of the special COVID-19 grant of R500 that was introduced in May 2020 to help individuals and families affected by the pandemic. The grant was initially set to run until October 2020, but was later extended until April 2021.
To be eligible for the COVID-19 grant, you needed to be:
1. A South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee;
2. Unemployed;
3. Not receiving any other form of income support from the government;
4. Between the ages of 18 and 59 years old; and
5. Not living in a government-funded institution.
If you met these criteria, you could apply for the grant by visiting the SASSA website or by sending an SMS with the word “COVID” followed by your ID number to 082 046 8553. Once your application was approved, you would receive the R500 payment monthly.
It is important to note that the COVID-19 grant was a temporary measure to help those affected by the pandemic, and it is unclear if it will be reintroduced in the future. However, SASSA does offer other social grants to eligible individuals and families who are struggling financially, such as child support grants, disability grants, and pension grants. To find out more about these grants and how to apply, visit the SASSA website or visit a local SASSA office.
