The R350 grant was introduced by the South African government in May 2020 to provide financial assistance to individuals who were unemployed and struggling to make ends meet due to the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The grant was initially intended to run from May to October 2020, but has since been extended several times, most recently until March 2022.

To be eligible for the R350 grant, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee registered on the Home Affairs database

  • Be between the ages of 18 and 59 years old

  • Have no income or receive no form of social security support, such as a government grant or unemployment insurance

  • Not be a student or receiving any other form of government-funded support

  • Not be residing in a government-funded institution, such as a prison or hospital

To apply for the R350 grant, individuals can visit the SASSA website or go to their nearest SASSA office to complete an application form. The application form requires personal information such as your name, ID number, contact details, and banking information (if applicable). You will also need to provide information about your income and expenses to demonstrate your need for the grant.

Once your application is processed and approved, you will receive a monthly payment of R350 into the bank account provided on your application form. The payment is made on the first day of each month and covers the previous month’s expenses. For example, the payment you receive on 1st April will cover your expenses for the month of March.

It’s important to note that the R350 grant is not a permanent form of financial assistance and will only be paid for as long as you meet the eligibility criteria. If your circumstances change, such as if you find employment or start receiving another form of social security support, you will no longer be eligible for the R350 grant.
