In 2023, the NSFAS application system is likely to open in November 2023 to 31 January 2024 when the results of the National Senior Certificate are released.

NSFAS Application Cycles

• In addition to the online application and walk-in assistive capture applications, the National Certificate Vocation (NC(v)) is available every year at the beginning of semester 1 and trimester 1.
• DHET calendar trimesters 2 & 3 in May & September, also walk-in assistive capture applications
• A walk-in application for assistive capture will be accepted during Semester 2 from June to July

TVET Colleges NSFAS Requirements for 2024

1. This bursary scheme is only available to South African citizens
2. A student must be registered at a public TVET college in South Africa that offers PLP, NC(V), or Report 191 programmes.
3. An NSFAS evaluation of a student’s financial need will determine eligibility for financial assistance.
4. Upon returning to the College, all students must demonstrate proven and acceptable academic performance (academically deserving) in accordance with the College’s progress policy or the Bursary Rules and Guidelines (whichever is higher).
5. It is not advisable for candidates to enroll in a qualification that duplicates previous state-funded learning
6. The maximum family income threshold is R350,000 per annum, and applicants who are admitted/receive a firm offer for enrolment in a college qualify.

NSFAS Funded Courses or Programmes-TVET Colleges NSFAS Application 2024-2025

Public TVET Colleges give a very huge range of courses/programmes that have been developed to respond to the scarce skills needed by employers. Courses differ in duration from a short course of a few hours to formal diploma courses of three years.

Naturally the costs of the courses also differ considerably but it is important to recall that Department of Higher Education and Training programmes are subsidised by 80% of the delivery cost and for the remaining 20% that would be paid by the student, many full bursaries are obtainable.

NSFAS funds Ministerial approved programmes and students must refer to each college, however the generally funded programmes are below:

• Engineering Studies – (National Certificate -Vocational) NQF levels 2-4 & Engineering studies – Report 191 N1-N6
• Engineering and Related Design; Electrical Infrastructure; Civil Engineering Construction and Information Technology & Computer Science
• Business & Utility Studies (National Certificate – Vocational) NQF levels 2-4 & Report 191 N1-N6
• Management; Marketing; Finance; Office Administration; Economics & Accounting; Education & Development; Hospitality; Tourism; Safety in Society and Transport & Logistics
• Pre-Learning Programme (PLP) funding through NSFAS

Prospective applicants are urged to submit their applications before the closing date as NSFAS may not consider late applications for this academic year.

Who Qualifies for NSFAS Bursary At TVET College 2025?

To be considered for NSFAS funding at a TVET college in 2025, students must meet the following eligibility criteria:

• South African citizens or permanent residents
• SASSA grant recipients
• Applicants whose combined gross household income is not more than R350 000 per year
• 
Persons with disabilities whose combined gross household income is not more than R600 000 per year.
• Must have an email account and cell phone number.

Required Documents For NSFAS Bursary Application At TVET Colleges 2025

Applicant must submit copies of these documents;

Students with disabilities must provide:

• A completed and signed Disability Annexure A Form

Students recognised as vulnerable children must provide:

•  An applicant who is recognised as a vulnerable child by the Department of Social Development must provide a Vulnerable Child Declaration form completed by a social worker

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has requirements that must be followed by applicants before applying for support. Kindly move in line with the requirements aligned by the authorities.

• Rule 2: If you don’t know what you’re doing, ask for help before filling out the application form.

• Rule 4: Make sure you have all of the required documents.

NSFAS General instructions for applicants

• Before filling out the application form, please read the following notes carefully. Make sure you read all of the sections with correct information
•  Your identity (ID) number must be written in the top right corner of every page of the application form and all supporting documents.
• NSFAS will not process any application forms that do not include ALL supporting papers.
• NSFAS will only process the first application that we receive. Please do not submit multiple applications unless NSFAS specifically demands it.
•  To connect with your application process, NSFAS requires either a cell phone number or an email address. You can create a free email account on Google at www.gmail.com, Yahoo at www.yahoo.co.za, or any other free email provider if you don’t already have one.
• If your application is approved, NSFAS will pay a portion of your student allowances via cell phone vouchers using the cell phone number you provide on the application form.
• Please open a bank account with any bank, such as Postbank, ABSA, Capitec, FNB, Standard Bank, Nedbank, or others, if you do not have one. Some student allowances will be deposited directly into their bank account.

About Nsfas

National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a government-supporting system in South Africa, that seeks to support citizen students financially through their tertiary education.

Who qualifies for NSFAS funding and should apply for support

• All South African citizens
• All SASSA grant recipients qualify for funding
• Applicants whose combined household income is not more than R350 000 per annum
• A person with disability: Combined household income must not be more than R600 000 per annum
• Students who started studying before 2018 and whose household income is not more than R122 000 per annum.

Before attempting to submit an application for funding, make sure you have certified and genuine copies of the following documents:

• Your South African identity card or birth certificate in its entirety (if you are younger than 16 years old).
• The ID of the guardian or parents (or death certificate where applicable)
• Pay to advise, employment letters, and pension advice that detail income (SASSA slips are not required and SASSA should not be included as household income).
